Shakira: “I am Stronger after the Breakup”
In a recent interview with Pagesix, Shakira opened up about her post-breakup journey, revealing that she has grown stronger and more resilient. The renowned singer shared her realization that women can lead fulfilling lives independently, despite her previous belief that she needed a partner to feel complete.
“I used to dream of a life as a wife and mother with my children under one roof. In reality, not all dreams come true. However, life has its own way of compensating for what we may have lost,” Shakira expressed.
The interview came shortly after Gerard Piqué, her former partner, publicly announced his relationship with Clara Chia Marti, a 23-year-old girlfriend. The football star posted affectionate pictures with his new companion on his social media at the end of January. Rumors about Piqué’s alleged affair with Marti while he was still with Shakira led to their separation.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Shakira shared her determination to focus on raising their two sons, Milan (10 years old) and Sasha (eight years old). She believes that strength emerges from enduring experiences of loss, pain, and accepting that life doesn’t always follow our desired path. Shakira emphasized that shattered dreams are a part of life, but one must pick up the pieces and become a role model for their children.
Amid media speculations, Shakira and Piqué confirmed their split in mid-2022 through a joint statement to the press, prioritizing the well-being of their children and requesting privacy during this time.
Speaking to Elle magazine, Shakira disclosed that their relationship came to an end due to both parties being deeply committed to their individual careers. She expressed feeling like the primary sacrificial figure in nurturing their family, leading to conflicts. In the earlier days of their relationship, in late 2014, Shakira moved to Spain to support Piqué’s football career, demonstrating her dedication to their love.
Shakira (born in 1977) and Piqué (born in 1987) first met in the spring of 2010 during the shooting of the music video “Waka Waka,” the official song of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Their public relationship began a year later. Throughout their 11-year journey together, the couple had two sons but chose not to marry. Following their separation, Shakira considered relocating their children to Miami, USA, to avoid media attention. However, Piqué opposed the idea as he wanted to remain close to their kids. Despite the challenges, Shakira has emerged stronger and determined to navigate her life’s new chapter.
